Located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar People, this 65,000m2 campus is a $853 million project and is expected to have 2,100 rooms. We interviewed the lead architecture firm on the project, Lyons, on their use of dRofus throughout the project lifecycle and how it contributes to delivering immense value to their client.

Can you provide an overview of your project?

The $853 million Edith Cowan University (ECU) City campus is part of the Perth City Deal, a collaboration between the Australian Government, Western Australian Government and Edith Cowan University, to deliver Perth’s first fully comprehensive inner-city university campus. The campus is designed to be a hub for innovative thinkers, adaptive learners and the leaders of tomorrow. The multi-level campus is unique among Australian university campuses and redefines the transformative potential for higher education. Set to be completed in late 2025, the campus is expected to reshape the heart of Perth and bring new energy to the city’s business, cultural and entertainment precincts. As one of the largest, most complex university buildings undertaken in Australia, we are proud to be leading the design of this world-class project.

At what stage of the project was dRofus used?

ECU City Campus is a design collaboration between three Architectural practices: Lyons (Melbourne), Haworth Tompkins (London) and Silver Thomas Hanley (Perth). dRofus has been deployed throughout all project phases to unite data across the collaborating architects and wider consultant team into one central database.

During early concept design / briefing, dRofus was used to establish the Schedule of Accommodation and store developing briefing information in a dynamic database that could be accessed by all project collaborators.

As the project progressed, briefing information was used to build detailed area schedules and produce spatial diagrams. During this phase, dRofus facilitated validation of the design brief against the real time building design, becoming a critical QA tool for the design and planning teams.

During detailed design and construction phases, dRofus was deployed to maintain consistent item coding structures throughout the project, which fed into Room Data Sheets containing coordinated architectural and services information.

What were the main reasons for using dRofus on your project?

The primary driver for using dRofus was to create a central source of project information for the collaborating architects and the wider consultant team. dRofus allowed teams working around the globe to refer to briefing information and room data in real time.

Another key aspect for the project was the creation of Room Data Sheets in a user friendly and consistent PDF format – a requirement of the project deliverables.

How has dRofus enhanced your workflows?

  • Ability to create area and FFE schedules accurately and efficiently
  • Room Data information storage in a live data environment
  • Fast production of PDF Room Data Sheets
  • Central location for services information
  • Item Code and Description management
  • Early integration of project information and data to inform the developing design

How does the use of dRofus benefit your client?

Room Data Sheets containing coordinated Architectural and consultant information were used throughout the design phases of the project to develop the design in collaboration with the client. This process gave the client user group access to detailed project information in a clear and readable format which could be updated and tracked as the project progressed.

CHALLENGES

  • Relatively low budget for design, implementation and marketing
  • 8-week time constraint for the whole project
  • Website must match existing digital corporate identity
  • Website should be deeply integrated into the HubSpot solution
  • Design & development from scratch is not feasible
  • Customer would like to be able to edit content and structure
  • Website must be implemented in three languages
  • Webdesign must match modern design standards

The ability to validate the current design against the project brief was crucial during the early design phases of the project, dRofus allowed us to QA the BIM model progressively as the design developed. "
